From the President...
Dear Harvard Club of Dallas Community:
As we transition into summer, I want to shine a light on one of the most meaningful and enduring philanthropic initiatives of the Harvard Club of Dallas: The Harvard Prize Book Program.
Harvard Prize Book: Honoring Local Excellence
Launched in 1910, the Harvard Prize Book Program recognizes outstanding high school juniors who excel academically and make significant contributions outside the classroom through leadership, character, and service. The program also occasionally honors teachers who inspire curiosity and excellence in their students.
The awards are presented annually by Harvard Clubs and Shared Interest Groups (SIGs) to students in over 1,000 high schools worldwide. Each honoree receives a book selected by the sponsoring Club or SIG, typically presented at the school’s end-of-year awards ceremony, often with remarks from a local alum.
Here in Dallas, our Club has participated in the program for more than 20 years. We traditionally present The Harvard Book, a classic collection of speeches and quotations that captures the spirit and values of Harvard. Each copy includes a Harvard bookplate naming the student and the sponsor, making it a lasting and personal keepsake.
In recent years, under the leadership of Brian Dethrow and Adrienne Dominguez, we’ve revitalized and expanded the program. While we continue to support a core list of long-standing partner schools, we now invite Club members to sponsor a book for a school of their own choosing. This has allowed us to expand the program’s reach while honoring our history. Thanks to the efforts of our Schools Committee leadership team, more deserving students across North Texas are being recognized and encouraged.
Looking ahead, we expect to begin outreach to schools around March so we can ensure participation before the spring ordering deadline. If you’re interested in sponsoring a book next year or would like to get more involved with the program, please reach out to Velda Powers at velda@sacleadership.com, and she’ll be in touch.
A Win for Texas: Theresa Chung Elected to the HAA Board
We are thrilled to share that Theresa Chung, our immediate past president, has been elected to the Harvard Alumni Association Board of Directors. Thank you to everyone who supported her candidacy. Teresa’s leadership continues to make a difference, now not just locally, but globally, and we’re proud to have a Texan representing us at the highest levels of alumni governance.
Annual Meeting Reminder
Each June, our Annual Meeting offers more than just a moment to conduct Club business, it’s an opportunity to reconnect, reflect, and look ahead with purpose.
We hope you’ll join us on Wednesday, June 25, for this year’s Annual Meeting and Member Gathering, graciously hosted once again at the home of Arthur Hollingsworth AB ’85, P’23, in Plano.
The evening begins at 6:30 p.m., with the meeting portion starting promptly at 7:00 p.m. We’ll recap highlights from the 2024–2025 Club year, vote on the proposed slate of Officers and Directors, preview upcoming events, and welcome any new business. Light appetizers and refreshments will be served, with both indoor and outdoor gathering spaces available.
Whether you’ve been active for years or are attending your first event, you’ll find a warm welcome. We especially encourage new members and those living in North Dallas and surrounding suburbs to attend, this location may be especially convenient for you. You’ll also have the chance to meet many of the Club’s officers and leaders.
The event is free to all Club members and their guests, but we kindly ask that you RSVP by June 18. You can RSVP here.
In fellowship and gratitude,
David Roosevelt AB'93
President, Harvard Club of Dallas
