The Fight Against Human Trafficking:
A Conversation with Dr. Shadi Kourosh
Twenty-five years after the U.S. Trafficking Victims Protection Act and the UN’s Palermo Protocol of 2000, we have seen how human trafficking is not only a matter of security and human rights, but a public health crisis. Healthcare professionals are an essential if underutilized asset in identifying, caring for, and socially reintegrating trafficking survivors. This event will highlight the work of Dr. Shadi Kourosh, founder of Harvard's Pro Bono Laser Clinic and Tattoo Removal Program for survivors of human trafficking. Dr. Kourosh’s efforts catalyzed the creation of a national and international task force in the medical community that brings together medical organizations, legal aid NGOs, the U.S. Government Office on Human Trafficking, the State Department, and the Department of Homeland Security.

As the founding director of MGH’s Skin of Color Program, Dr. Kourosh created a medical home and center for research focused on skin conditions disproportionately affecting people of color. She is the founder and director of Harvard’s pro-bono laser clinic and tattoo removal program, assisting those escaping gangs and human trafficking to be safe and reintegrate into society.
