Professor Coleman will explain how parallel booms in oil, gas, and wind power are transforming North American energy markets. Well-worn debates often make us focus on differences between fossil fuels & renewable power, but this talk will highlight the crucial similarities that are driving energy investment and policy. First, companies around the world are finding ways oil, natural gas, and wind power much cheaper, and Texas has been at the epicenter of all three of these global energy booms. Second, transitioning to cleaner fuels like natural gas and renewable electricity will require massive new investments in pipelines and power-lines because these fuel sources are more expensive to transport than dirtier fuels like coal. Third, changing rules for approving pipelines and power-lines, and increased public scrutiny, is increasing the risk for investors in these projects. Although the public often focuses on oil pipelines, this talk will explain why these changing rules may be an even greater risk for cleaner power sources like natural gas and wind power.
